Q-CHAT Autism Screening for Young Children

About the Q-CHAT
Developed by Allison et al. at the Autism Research Centre, University of Cambridge, the Q-CHAT extends the original CHAT with more quantitative scoring. This makes it sensitive to the full autism spectrum — not just severe presentations — and better suited to children who have grown beyond the M-CHAT-R age window but are not yet school-age.
Parents answer each question based on what they regularly observe at home. The checklist covers eye contact, language, play, social interest, and repetitive behaviour. Results include a score with context and a recommendation on whether further evaluation is warranted.

Frequently asked questions
- How is Q-CHAT different from M-CHAT-R?
- The M-CHAT-R is validated for ages 16 to 30 months; Q-CHAT is for ages 2 to 4 years. They share similar domains but the Q-CHAT covers a broader range of behaviours and uses a more quantitative approach, making it sensitive to subtler presentations.
- Who fills out the Q-CHAT?
- A parent or primary caregiver completes the questionnaire based on what they observe at home. No specialist knowledge is required.
- What score indicates a concern?
- Higher scores indicate more reported traits associated with autism. Our results page explains your score band and what action, if any, is recommended.
- Is the Q-CHAT validated?
- Yes. The Q-CHAT was developed and validated in a general population sample by researchers at the Autism Research Centre, University of Cambridge.
- My child is 4 — should I use Q-CHAT or CAST?
- Age 4 sits at the boundary. If your child is closer to 3, Q-CHAT is appropriate. If they are solidly 4 and in school, the CAST (designed for ages 4–11) may be more suitable.
